5 Things: Learned on National Flag Football Tourney Trip

by dre of onustees.com on 17 January 2012

MLK Weekend @ Nationals… a place where brothers can chase the man in public…

During MLK weekend the USFTL (United States Flag & Touch Football League) held their 41st Annual National Championships in Orlando, Florida…

These are 5 Things… I learned while playing and traveling with my Men’s 8 on 8 team…

  1. The radio is awful… It’s not even funny anymore… There were only 5 artists played across 4 different “hip hop” stations with only 7 SONGS!!! I’m not sure if this was because we were in Orlando… or if this is the nature of ALL “hip hop” radio stations… But Aubrey, J. Cole, T-Pain, LMFAO and the apparent overlord of the radio waves Rihanna were the only folks heard on the air… Well, them and commercials… There WILL be a doing it wrong post about this… soon. Very soon. “I heard trash songs, in a hopeless place.”
  2. Nothing says you’re old and out of shape… like chasing a bunch of 21 year olds up and down a football field… Midway through my last game… I jotted down a love letter… “Dear Insanity… I was wrong to quit you. I didn’t mean to sneak off with those Food Trucks and Hamsnacks. They were just always around… and we became stagnant. But now I know… you were there for me and only had good intentions. If you give me a second chance… I swear… we’ll go to the end this time. Forever yours (or until the next bacon craving…) – the skinny fat guy who’s lost a step.”
  3. Watching women play contact football in tights and cycling shorts may be the sexiest thing of all-time…  Salute to all of the women who played in the 8 on 8 league this weekend… Thank you. There’s nothing like seeing a young lady take a halfback toss right run, set up her blocks, cut back and take it to the house for 60 yards… Well, I guess watching a safety scan the play, hawk one side of the field to snag an interception and return it 70 yards for a TD would top that… Then there’s the 45 yard over-the-shoulder catch on a seam route in stride to put the other team completely out of the game… and tournament for that matter. All those things occurred in one game by the eventual champions, “Lady All Met”… Congrats to those wonderful women.
  4. The North needs both Waffle House & Pollo Tropical… Waffle House has always been a request in my heart (if only for the cheese eggs)… However, during my second trip to Nationals… Pollo Tropical has solidified it’s spot in my “HOW COME WE DON’T HAVE ONE OF THOSE!?!” rants… Chicken AND RIBS??? In one affordable meal!?! Oh wait, I can get the Trio platter and add Roasted Pork to that delicious madness??? With 2 sides??? Ok, sold. Here’s a $10… and here’s… Timeout! Why are you giving me change back??? I thought you would need more! Oh, Pollo Tropical… I love you.
  5. The 4th thing I learned completely goes against the 2nd thing I learned… However, I will try to Do Better and maintain this second go-round with Insanity… Today is Day 2… 58 to go…

Major Taylor’s Chicken formerly known as General Tso’s

by dre of onustees.com on 19 November 2009

Hello world…

A couple of weeks back I had a hankering for some General Tso’s chicken…

However, over the years my faith in the quality of “chicken” one gets from the local carry-out has wavered… to the point that I only order either a shrimp dish or one with chicken wings… (there’s no denying a wing is a wing…right?)

Which led me to discover a Youtube videothat showed how to cook gourmet General Tso’s chicken… It looked simple enough… and it was! Although, I didn’t have all the ingredients my substitutes seemed suffice… and I believe I’ve narrowed down the recipe to…

  1. chop chicken breast into bite size pieces…
  2. fry said pieces like you’re working at Popeyes…
  3. create your own personal “General Tso’s” sauce… in my case “Major Taylor’s”… I used 1/2 cup of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup of Stir Fry sauce and 1/4 cup of Teriyaki sauce… (point being… whatever was in the fridge and/or cabinet)
  4. pour sauce in a wok-like pan… bring to a bubble…
  5. dump fried chicken bites in pan… stir…
  6. Serve over rice… (I used Uncle Ben’s)

TA-DA!!!

General Tso’s Chicken done your way…

…other tidbits… you can add your own spice and veggies as you see fit!

:-)

Enjoy the pics!
